The Anacostia Trails Heritage Area (ATHA) is one of 13 state-designated Heritage Areas in Maryland. The organization is focused on economic development and quality-of-life-through cultural tourism and public history. ATHA is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that manages the Heritage Area in Prince George’s County, Maryland and often uses the branding identity of Maryland Milestones

In a 2020 report, the organization’s economic impact was calculated at $36.1 million annually including enticing heritage tourists to the region and the organization’s grantmaking activities. This data quantifies the impact of the Heritage Area known for its grantmaking, partnerships, events, and advocacy for trails, parks, historic sites, museums, and the arts.

Based on the success of the organization’s efforts over the past 20 years and the sustained need for tourism marketing, Anacostia Trails Heritage Area embarked on a boundary expansion feasibility study to bring the program to a larger area of Prince George’s County.

Survey objective: To determine how people engage with the current Heritage Area, the ATHA 501(c)3 organization, the Maryland Milestones branding identity, and opportunities for rebranding as the organization embarks on a substantial boundary and service area expansion.
